My work originates from a place of pure abstraction.

Until recently I have approached my  paintings within a series framework. Early on, as I was finding my way with painting, having a clear intention helped me narrow things down so that I could learn the things I needed to learn. Such as my preferences in color choices, how I liked to weight things on the page, what different kinds of energy I could bring to the work.

But I find working in a series may not currently serve me. I have thoughts and ideas that inform my work, like - society’s disconnect, the magic of nature, the beauty of primitive visual communication, the earth, the cosmos, our destinies - but when I actually enter the studio and pick up a tool I try to quiet my thinking brain and explore the feeling of a painting.

Each painting in progress changes with every work session based on what kind of energy I bring to the studio that day. My energy determines the quality of the information I am open to receiving and my ability to allow it to flow through me. That is different everyday. At some point the collection of fragments looking back at me tells some kind of story that I feel I want to spend more time with, so I stop the work at that point and have a listen.
